Water – 1 Cup
Sugar – 2 tbsp
Yeast – 1 tbsp
All Purpose Flour – 2 Cups
Salt – 1/2 tbsp
Egg – 1
Ghee/Melted Butter – 2 tbsp (For Dough)
Cooking Oil – 1 tbsp
Butter – As required (Roughly 50 gm)
Egg – 1 (For Egg Wash)
Directions
- In a glass, combine 1 cup of lukewarm water, 2 tablespoons of sugar, and 1 tablespoon of yeast. Mix well, cover the glass, and allow it to rest for 10 minutes.
- In a large bowl, place 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1/2 tablespoon of salt, 1 egg, 2 tablespoons of ghee or melted butter, and the prepared water and yeast mixture. Mix the ingredients and knead the dough. Once the dough is well combined, coat it with cooking oil and let it proof for 1.5 to 2 hours.
- After the dough has proofed, lightly knead it and divide it into 3 equal portions.
- Roll out each portion of dough into flatbreads. For the first flatbread, sprinkle some all-purpose flour on top, spread softened butter generously, and place the second flatbread on top, repeating the process. Continue this layering with the remaining flatbreads.
- Once all the flatbreads are stacked, repeat the previous step, but this time, apply butter to only half of the surface area. Fold the stacked dough twice in half to create a quarter circle shape. Allow it to rest in the refrigerator for 2 hours.
- Remove the dough from the refrigerator and roll it into a square shape. Cut it into 4 triangles.
- Make a small cut in the base of each triangle and roll it up, bending the corners inwards.
- Line a baking tray with parchment paper and place the rolled croissants on it. Let them rest for 1 hour to complete the proofing process. Brush them with whisked eggs.
- Preheat your oven to 180 degrees Celsius (356 degrees Fahrenheit) and bake the croissants for 20 minutes. Once they turn golden brown, remove them from the oven, and you’re ready to enjoy your Homemade Butter Croissants.

Serving the Dish
Your delicious Homemade Butter Croissants are now ready to be enjoyed. Serve them warm for breakfast, brunch, or as a delightful snack. These flaky, buttery pastries pair perfectly with a steaming cup of coffee, tea, or a glass of fresh juice. The golden-brown, crescent-shaped croissants are a treat for both the eyes and the taste buds, making them an excellent addition to any breakfast or brunch spread.
Storage and Shelf Life
To preserve the freshness of your croissants, store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2-3 days. If you plan to keep them longer, consider freezing. Simply wrap individual croissants in plastic wrap or foil, then place them in a freezer-safe bag. Frozen croissants can last for about 2-3 months. When ready to enjoy, reheat them in a preheated oven at 180°C (356°F) for a few minutes until warm and crisp.
Useful Tips
Here are some useful tips to ensure your croissants turn out perfect every time:
- Use high-quality ingredients, particularly for the butter.
- Don’t rush the proofing process; allow the dough to rise properly.
- Ensure that your kitchen is at an ideal temperature for dough proofing (around 70°F or 21°C).
- Be gentle with the dough when rolling and shaping the croissants.
- Experiment with different fillings such as chocolate or almond paste for flavor variety.
- When preparing the yeast mixture, be sure to use lukewarm water. Water that is too cold or too hot can have an adverse effect on yeast activation. Lukewarm water at around 110°F (43°C) is the sweet spot. This temperature helps the yeast activate and ensures that your croissants rise properly and turn out light and fluffy.
- After you’ve expertly shaped your croissants, it’s essential to proof them on the same baking tray on which you intend to bake them. This step ensures that the croissants maintain their shape and structure during the final proofing process.
